Fedora 12 | KDE 4

A few devel friends kept hounding me to try kde again, so I gave in and I'm quite impressed. KDE seems to have finally stepped things up and I'm really liking it. I've always been a gnome guy but right now, I think I'm going cheat on it for a while.

Do you still like KDE? Have you seen the newer version? I've seen Gnome on my son-in-law's computer but I still like KDE. :D

The version I used in that screenshot was pretty good, but it was by no means any where near is good as gnome and sadly it will never be as good as gnome. KDE is too bulky, slow and has far less ability to theme.:(

Gnome is simpler, faster and you can configure the crap out of it. :)

oh, ok. My son-in-law uses that, like I said, and he loves it. I'm just used to KDE. When I look at his Gnome, I have to keep asking, "How do you do this, or find that?". Gnome has a GUI package manager, right?

Kde has had this type of panel menu since about 10 years ago, you must be really new to linux because its always seen in kde shots, nothing new at all. The menu in panel is similar to the rather new global menu seen in some gnome and xfce shots, but yeah, kde is the originator of this type of menu style excluding that of the mac's, lol

Oh, I see, yeah I'm new to Linux. I first used some version of Suse back then but I knew nothing about linux, then I've met Ubuntu 8.04, since that I'm using linux besides windows. (mostly gnome but I've tried out kde and xfce too)

You are using linux at a good time, a lot of the programs have gui's and are much more user friendly for the non-geeks. I hope you stick with it, although its still rough around the edges and you might spend a couple hours of time looking for some solutions and workarounds its worth it in the long run.

Yeah, I really agree, back then I even needed some ubuntu how-to's help to get my windows partitions mounted in it, I've spent hours and hours searching for solutions nearly for everything but oh well it was fun when I didn't have any other things to do, but other than that it was so frustrating I've uninstalled and reinstalled ubuntu several times. Now just nearly everything works out of the box, mostly in Linux Mint the distro I'd recommend to anyone who is trying out linux at the first time or just searching for an easy to use distro ^^.

I use to think the same, but I can't safely say that anymore, its quite an improvement they have done in such a short time. And this is coming from a die hard xfce/gnome fan of 10 years or so.

Hmm, sounds good.
Last time I tried KDE (4.3), it was buggy and crashed tons. :(
However I'll give it a go. :P

That's weird, I haven't had any linux distro crash on any of my systems in all the 10 years I've been using it, like I said you have to know what you're doing. It should work flawlessly, especially on old systems that have low memory(2gb and below) and slow processors(3ghz and below). :)

Ok, sweet, A core2duo 3.4GHz + 4GB RAM should be fine then. :)

Core2duo processors are slow and fall into that perfect category, so you will be fine. You might want to get at least 8GB of ram though, I run my desktop on 16GB or ram. Enjoy some kde. :)

And yes, I'll go download the latest Kubuntu beta now. :)

Yeah, Core 2 Duo's are rather slow and old(4 years ago), even the Core 2 Quad's make them seem like nothing, not to mention i3, i5 and i7 absolutely murder a core2duo, lol. I've got the i7 in my desktop and an i3 in one of laptops and the speed is ridiculous. :)

Yeah, I'm liking kde now. For me, the panel is about 2 pixels too small but that's another story not easily fixed with simple resize, lol.

So far I've had no problems with grouped windows. Too many factors to pinpoint what could be your problem. Do you have a log of the crash? If not, try to make it crash again so you can get one.

hmmm, no, i didnīt find any log about this, and if i start e.g. two dolphins from konsole, and group them, it tells me nothing :(

it will work better, if i installed ubuntu 10.04 and not just a kde update in 9.10, maybe :D
